Bank accounts in Germany compared: fees, access and English support
A neutral comparison of three different account models for international residents: a branch bank, a direct bank and a mobile bank. There is no overall winner—the useful choice depends on how you bank.
Data checked 12 October 2026
Direct answer
Which bank account is best in Germany?
There is no single best bank account for everyone in Germany. The practical choice depends on account fees, residence and identification requirements, language scope, card and cash use, and the legal entity holding your deposits.
This comparison uses three selected accounts to illustrate different operating models. It does not claim that these are the three best accounts in Germany, that every applicant will be accepted or that a lower monthly fee always means lower total cost.

Access is not guaranteed
A provider may request more documents or decline an ordinary current-account application. Verify the current residence, nationality and identity-document combination before applying.
Cash and currency costs vary
ATM operators may impose their own charge. Foreign-currency, cash-deposit, assisted-service and overdraft costs can apply even when maintenance is free.
Trade-offs, not picks
Which differences are likely to matter to you?
If branches and established cash access matter
Deutsche Bank is the selected conventional branch model. The trade-off in this comparison is a fixed monthly fee and German contract language. Branch access does not remove the need to check card, cash and international-use charges.
If you can maintain the incoming-payment condition
DKB’s published maintenance fee and international card conditions change with age, qualifying incoming funds and active status. Compare both the qualifying and non-qualifying case rather than assuming the headline €0 case will always apply.
If mobile onboarding and English verification matter
N26 publishes clear digital opening requirements and English verification. Readers who want a physical card, frequent ATM use or cash deposits should include the card fee, withdrawal quota and CASH26 conditions.
Opening and identity
Check eligibility before comparing convenience
- Does the provider accept your current residence and identity document?
- Can you complete the published identity process?
- Is a German address or other evidence requested?
- Does the legal name match every document?
- Which tax-residence information is required?
Marketing language does not guarantee account opening. A supported language or app does not override identity, residence, anti-money-laundering or product rules.
Language scope
App language, service language and contract language are different facts
Deutsche Bank publishes an English overview and English customer-service context, while stating that its contract language and terms are German. N26 supports English onboarding and verification. For DKB, this comparison makes no broad English-support claim because the previously published language FAQ did not remain directly retrievable at review time.
Before signing, confirm that you can understand the contractual documents, security process and support route—not only the marketing page.
Cards and cash
Model your real usage
List how often you withdraw cash, whether you deposit cash, which currencies you use, whether you need a physical card and whether a girocard matters. Then calculate the non-qualifying case as well as the promotional or conditional case.
- Card issuing or delivery fee
- ATM quota, minimum and operator charges
- Cash-deposit availability and fee
- Foreign-currency conversion charge
- Replacement, emergency and assisted-service costs
Legal entity and protection
Compare the bank—not only the brand
BaFin states that eligible balances on current, call-deposit and savings accounts are generally protected up to €100,000 per customer and bank under the statutory scheme. Eligibility, temporary higher balances and exclusions follow legal and scheme rules.
Identify the legal institution holding the deposit. Additional voluntary funds have separate statutes and must not be treated as an unconditional state guarantee.

If an ordinary account is not available
A basic payment account (Basiskonto) is a separate legal account type, not a fourth entry in this product comparison. BaFin states that consumers legally residing in the EU generally have a right to one when the statutory conditions are met.
It supports core payment functions. The right does not mean one of the three ordinary accounts above must accept every applicant, and a bank is not required to grant an overdraft.

Disclosure
General information, not a recommendation
This comparison covers three selected current accounts and is not a complete market survey, test or ranking. It does not assess whether an account is suitable for you or whether a provider will accept your application. Fees, eligibility rules, supported identity documents and services can change. Check the provider’s current application, fee information and contractual documents before opening an account.
Deposit protection depends on the legal bank entity, the type of deposit and the applicable scheme rules.
