The German pension system, explained

Start with your insurance record. Then separate the pension you have built up from a projection of what might come later.

Start with these three questions.

Check your record

Compare the Versicherungsverlauf with your own work and life timeline.

Read the assumptions

Separate accrued entitlements, projections and gross amounts.

Connect countries

Ask which foreign periods and pension ages matter to your case.

Start with the documents you already have.

Before comparing private retirement arrangements, establish what is already recorded in your German statutory pension account. Then separate the entitlement built up so far from a projection that assumes more contributions in the future.

Versicherungsverlauf

What has been recorded?

The periods and earnings stored in your insurance history.

Renteninformation

What do the figures describe?

Accrued entitlements and a projection under stated assumptions.

Those documents answer different questions. An accurate record is the foundation for making sense of the figures that follow.

Check the Versicherungsverlauf before trusting a projection.

Your insurance history sets out the periods and earnings recorded in the pension account. Compare it with your own work and life timeline. A period you do not recognise, or a period that appears to be missing, is a reason to ask a specific question.

Kontenklärung is the process for clarifying the account. Official administrative guidance explains that evidence can include payslips and records of education, child-raising or periods abroad, depending on the gap. A period being relevant for clarification does not mean that it counts in the same way for every benefit.

  • 01Make a year-by-year list of employment and other potentially relevant periods.
  • 02Compare that list with the dates shown in the insurance history.
  • 03Mark a specific gap or discrepancy instead of estimating what it might be worth.
  • 04Ask DRV which evidence is needed and use the official clarification route.

You do not need to share your pension insurance number or the document with Finanz2Go. Keep the records and any supporting evidence in your own secure files.

Read each figure in the Renteninformation on its own terms.

The federal administration portal describes annual pension information for insured people who meet the conditions, including being at least 27 and having paid contributions for at least five years. It contains accrued entitlements and a projection of the pension at standard retirement age.

The projection uses average contributions from the last five calendar years. That is a calculation assumption, not confirmation that your future work, pay or contributions will follow the same pattern.

Entitlement built up so farWhich recorded periods and current rules does it use?
Projected future pensionWhat further contributions and adjustments does it assume?
Monthly amountIs this gross, and what remains to be considered before comparing it with spending?

The stated amounts are gross. Health and long-term care contributions, and potentially taxes, still need to be considered. The official guidance also warns that the projected amount does not account for the loss of purchasing power. Comparing it directly with today’s net household spending would mix different measures.

Section 109 of the pension law requires pension information and pension statements to refer to current law and the stored insurance periods, subject to future legal changes and the accuracy and completeness of those records. From age 55, the regular information is replaced every three years by a more detailed Rentenauskunft.

How does the statutory pension formula fit in?

Section 64 of Social Code VI calculates the monthly pension using personal earnings points, the pension-type factor and the current pension value. The personal points already reflect the access factor. The illustration below shows the relationship without inventing a current euro value or calculating your benefit.

Retirement age and the qualifying period are separate checks.

The standard old-age pension requires the relevant standard retirement age and the general five-year qualifying period, as well as an application. For people born in 1964 or later, the standard retirement age is 67; for earlier cohorts the age follows the applicable transition rules.

The standard old-age pension itself cannot be brought forward simply by accepting a deduction. Other pension categories have their own conditions. Do not turn “five years” or “age 67” into a complete eligibility answer without checking the pension type and your record.

Qualifying periods can include more than months of ordinary employment. The official application guidance lists several creditable categories and their conditions. Ask DRV to check the actual record rather than counting years from your first German employment contract.

Work in another country can matter without creating one combined pension pot.

Under applicable European coordination rules, insurance periods in other member states can be considered when checking qualifying periods. DRV explains that social-security agreements can also contain coordination provisions. Which countries and periods can be combined depends on the rules that actually apply.

That does not mean Germany takes over every country’s pension. Each institution checks the entitlement under its own rules and pays the pension it grants. In the EU, the official Your Europe guide explains national and coordinated calculations, as well as differences in pension ages.

Build a list of countries and periods. Bring it to the pension authority when asking about your position. The coordination question, the start date and taxation are separate issues. A short online guide cannot settle all three from your nationality alone.

Your Europe recommends asking for information at least six months before retirement when claiming from several countries, because the process can take time. For countries outside the applicable European rules, check the specific agreement or national rules with DRV.

Turn the paperwork into a short list of next steps.

  • 01Request your current insurance history or pension information using the official DRV service.
  • 02Clarify the periods that do not match your own records.
  • 03Label accrued and projected figures separately in your planning notes.
  • 04Keep gross pension figures, future net income and today’s spending distinct.
  • 05Resolve foreign insurance periods and relevant pension ages before making assumptions.

The pension-gap calculator can then help you explore your own spending and income assumptions within its stated scope. It does not replace DRV’s calculation or check whether an entitlement exists.

Leaving Germany raises another set of questions. Read the pension-refund guide before assuming that departure creates a right to cash out. Private retirement contracts and flexible investment accounts require a separate comparison of their own terms.

Questions readers often ask

Is the projected pension a guaranteed future payment?

No. Read the assumptions and the qualification about current law and the stored record. Future contributions, legal changes and purchasing power can change the planning picture.

I worked abroad. Should I ignore those years?

No. Keep the records and ask which coordination rules apply. Do not assume every period from every country can be pooled automatically.

Where can I request the official documents?

DRV’s service page links to the request process for an insurance record or pension forecast. Use that official route for personal records.
